Homecoming of Persephone digital collage June 2013 |
"Persephone is known as the goddess of the underworld. She was stolen by Hades from her mother Demeter, and proclaimed his wife. Demeter searched the earth for Persephone, accompanied by Hecate, who bore a torch guiding the way. When Demeter learned that Zeus had conspired her daughter’s abduction, she refused to let the earth fruit until her daughter was returned. Zeus consented, however once a year Persephone had to visit her husband in the underworld. Here, Persephone drifts patiently while balancing embers upon her head, pensive yet carrying a token either to or from the underworld."
